The History of Modern Magic \ Goren Gordon

Magic is the power to control ones’ being and its environment through powers that surround and envelop the existence of all things. The control of these powers is though the wizard’s will and with aid of no one else. The greater the wizard’s will power and control on his thoughts and wishes, the greater the extent of his magical powers and the greater the finesse he can exert on his spells and chants

Casting a spell, or the control over the magical energies, is through three controllers: verbal use, mundane components and gestures. These controllers are used by novices, apprentices and wizards of no great strength of their own, for the true sorcerer control those energies with mere thought; he wills the world with a quick wish and a powerful intent, and it happens. Here lies the history of modern magic, from the discoveries of the magical energies, to the evolution of archmages, those who rule nature with their thought.

The discovery of the magical energies, then called electromagnetic fields, changed man’s history forever, for from that moment he began to shape the world, to create an environment around him which consisted wholly from these powers, devices and machines that harnesses those powers to do work for him. Through computer and truck, planes and television, the world had become an environment immersed with magical energies for its discoverer to command.

The breakthrough of understanding and accomplishment of great deeds with the EM fields were the discovery and usage of radio waves, which enabled transmission of messages and commands from one place to another without physical contact.

First, as with ancient magic, the usage of it was through powerful and cumbersome devices constructed or found namely transmitters, receivers and computers. Only through them, and the uneasy use of them with physical contact, could man enforce the magical powers of the world for his own end.

But slowly and surely, the devices were incorporated into the environment, not as controllers, but as an integral part of it. That stage proved to be the most crucial in the evolution of humans’ control over its surroundings. It has enabled the direct and first non-physical control of human beings over the magical power, because the transmission and conversion of it to mundane capabilities was now incorporated into the very existence of the world.

The second evolutionary step into magehood was the entrance of verbal and gestured control. These two controllers were developed simultanesouly for their mechanisms of action and manipulation of the magical environment are similar. Thus, with a single word or gesture of the hand, the magical devices intertwined in the environment recognized and transformed the human commands into magical energies and then to mundane work. With that era, started the magical religion, because, for many people, that was the stage that resembled most of the ancient magic. Many discussions were held over the resemblance of that ancient mage, entering his hut, making a sacred gesture and mumbling an ancient and powerful word and light brightens the darkness around him; to the peaceful businessman entering his home saying ‘light’ and passing a hand over a lightbulb and that same darkness wavers and disappears at his command.

Then came the third stage. Many argue that that was only a middle stage, somehow connecting the second ancient wizard-like stage to the true, full archmagehood of the human evolution. In that stage, man started to incorporate the magical devices and transmitters into his own body, thus enabling a mere thought to transmit the magical energies through space, to the changed environment. Thus, his perception of the universe enhanced as he added new magical devices to aid and enlarge his own senses. With these changes, a new era began. Man had no need to go nowhere, nor to say or gesture a thing. Magical energies surrounded him and enveloped his entire being.

The last stage, full wizardry, began when the magical devices were eliminated from (though, some say annihilated to) the human body. When a child was born, his control over the environment was already complete, for his will transmuted the magical energies within his body and transmitted it to his surroundings to be ruled.

Thus ends the history of Modern Magic.
